Implementing the ACMA’s Media Diversity Measurement Framework

""

The ACMA welcomes today’s announcement from the Minister for Communications, the Hon Michelle Rowland MP, on new funding for the ACMA to implement its Media Diversity Measurement Framework

This framework will monitor the state of the Australian news market and measure the levels of diversity across Australia’s print, radio, TV and online news media landscape.

The Media Diversity Measurement Framework builds on earlier ACMA research and has been informed by a public consultation process undertaken earlier in the year.

In a report to government released today by the ACMA, we examined the existing research landscape, explained how we amended our previous framework in response to stakeholder feedback, and provided recommendations on how this framework could be implemented.

The Australian Government has accepted our recommendations and the ACMA will now commence work to implement the first stage of the Media Diversity Measurement Framework over the next 12 months. This will include building or taking carriage of key datasets on the Australian news market, commissioning new research to fill identified gaps, and establishing a regular reporting series beginning late 2024.

This work will provide government with a robust long-term evidence base to help inform potential policy, regulatory or program interventions under the News Media Assistance Program (News MAP).

The ACMA thanks all stakeholders who contributed to the process, and looks forward to ongoing engagement with industry, academia and subject-matter experts as this work progresses.
